Budget hotel review

Excalibur

South Strip, across from New York New York and MGM Grand5 min read

The verdict

Cheap bed on the Strip for around 80 dollars all in, but the room gets musty and there is not much to do. Three stars.

Best for: Budget travelers who just need a cheap bed on the Strip and plan to explore elsewhere.

I booked a basic king at the Excalibur so I could walk you through the whole property. The hallway on the way to my room smelled a bit, so I was not sure what to expect, but the room itself had no weird smell, just a faint cleaner smell and it felt clean. That was a relief.

This is a budget hotel and I went in judging it on that basis. Here is the honest version of what you are getting.

What I liked

  • Cheap, I paid 29 dollars and it came to about 80 all in with resort and fees, which is not bad for being on the Strip
  • Great location, right across from New York New York and MGM Grand with shops you can walk to easily and a free tram down to Mandalay Bay
  • I got a strip view from the 15th floor without even booking one, looking at the MGM Grand and the old Tropicana site
  • The food court has a dozen options and the Tournament of Kings show was genuinely fun, worth seeing once

What to know

  • The room started to feel musty the longer I was in it, there is no air vent bringing in fresh air
  • Not a ton to do on property, you pretty much have to leave and head to the north Strip for things to do
  • The bathroom is very basic and the shower looks like it could use a renovation

The room

I was on the 15th floor and got a strip view I did not even book, with the MGM Grand in sight and the old Tropicana site where they are leveling the ground for a future baseball stadium. The room smelled clean when I walked in, but the more time I spent in it the mustier it felt, since there is no vent pulling in fresh air.

The bathroom is very basic. A single sink, a toilet, and a smallish old looking shower that could use a renovation. It does the job, nothing more.

The pool, the property, and the show

The pool area is not too bad, a couple of pools spread out, lots of free lawn chairs you do not pay for, and a fairly big space, though one pool was closed for the season. The casino floor is big with lots of slots and table games at 10 and 15 dollar minimums.

There is an arcade, but watch the cost, it is 2 dollars for a card, 10 dollars for 100 credits, and games run a couple bucks each, so you can burn 50 dollars in half an hour. The highlight was the Tournament of Kings, where they bring you half a chicken, a roll, potatoes, corn, apple strudel, and free Pepsi, and the show itself was a good time.

What I paid

I paid 29 dollars and with resort and fees it came out to about 80 dollars all in. For a room on the Strip that is pretty good. It is a budget place, so you are paying for a cheap bed, not a luxury stay.

David's tip

Book it for the cheap room and the location, then plan to explore the north Strip for things to do. And if you are here, catch the Tournament of Kings, I would recommend it even if you are not staying.
