Morrissey Cancels Wynn Residency One Week Before Opening

The shows were booked into Encore Theater, Wynn's 1,480 seat venue that partners with AEG to book headliner residencies and one off engagements. The first two dates, August 14 and 15, had already sold out before the cancellation went out, according to Casino.org.

Ticketmaster's cancellation notice tells buyers they do not need to file a claim. Refunds go back to the original payment method automatically.

The residency was tied to Morrissey's new album, Make-Up Is a Lie, released back in March. AEG has not said whether the dates will be rescheduled or whether the album promotion continues in some other form.

This is not Morrissey's first Las Vegas cancellation. Casino.org's reporting traces a pattern going back to 2012, with the singer postponing or canceling shows here over the years for reasons that have included health problems, exhaustion, technical issues, a bad reaction to medication and, in one case, sleep deprivation.

That history is why the reaction from longtime fans has leaned more toward resignation than shock. "Unforeseen logistical challenges" is vague even by Morrissey standards, and AEG has not elaborated further.

The frustration shows up in how fans are reacting online. One commenter on Casino.org's coverage argued that after this many cancellations, any venue booking Morrissey should be springing for refundable airfare and hotel reservations for ticket holders as a condition of the deal, not just a refunded ticket.

Wynn itself is not affected. The resort still has its full slate of restaurants, the pool, and XS and Encore Beach Club running, along with everything else on property. Encore Theater will likely book something else into that August window or leave it dark for now.

The bigger lesson applies to anyone stacking a Vegas trip on top of a single show. The ticket refund is automatic, but airfare, non-refundable hotel rates and anything else you locked in around these specific dates are on you to sort out. If a show is the whole reason for a trip, especially one from an artist with this track record, keep the rest of the booking flexible until the ticket has actually been used.

Encore Theater itself is worth knowing about even outside this residency. It is one of the more intimate showrooms on the Strip, and AEG regularly rotates limited run engagements through it, so if you are chasing a specific artist there, book your trip closer to the actual dates rather than the announcement.
