Riding the High Roller at the LINQ: Worth It?

6 min read

The High Roller is the giant observation wheel you see lit up at the LINQ, right in the middle of the Strip. At 550 feet it is one of the tallest in the world, and I have ridden it in daylight, at sunset, and three drinks deep in the party cabin.

Here is whether it is worth your time, the one cabin upgrade that actually pays for itself, and how it compares to the other two high up views in town.

01

What the Ride Is Like

The High Roller is a slow, smooth, full rotation that takes about 30 minutes. The cabins are big glass pods that hold a crowd, so it is comfortable and easy, not a thrill ride. Tickets generally run in the $25 to $40 range depending on day, night, and how far ahead you book.

It sits at the end of the LINQ Promenade, an open air stretch of bars and shops, so you can make an evening of it. The view covers the whole central Strip, which is exactly the part you want to see.

02

Day vs Night

Night wins. It is not close. The Strip lights up, the Bellagio fountains go off below you, and the whole valley glows. A daytime ride shows you the desert and the backs of buildings, which is fine but forgettable.

If you can only do one, go after dark. The sweet spot is boarding right at sunset so you catch the sky changing and then the lights coming up during your rotation.

03

The Open Bar Happy Half Hour Cabin

This is the move. For an upgrade you can ride in the Happy Half Hour cabin, which has a real bartender pouring unlimited drinks for your full rotation. Since the ride lasts about 30 minutes, a couple of pours can basically cover the upgrade.

It turns a quiet sightseeing loop into a little party with a view. If you are going to ride at all and you drink, this is the version to book. Just expect a livelier, fuller cabin.

04

vs the Eiffel Tower Viewing Deck

The Eiffel Tower deck at Paris is the better view of the Bellagio fountains, full stop. You are standing on an open platform looking straight down the Strip at the water show. It is higher energy and feels more dramatic than a slow wheel.

If your main goal is the fountains and a classic Strip photo, I send people to the Eiffel Tower deck first. The High Roller is the better pick if you want a longer, seated, drink in hand experience.

05

vs the STRAT

The STRAT tower at the north end is way taller, over 1,100 feet, with an observation deck and thrill rides on top. The view is the highest in town and the most sweeping, but you are looking at the Strip from a distance, not floating right over it.

Go to the STRAT for the altitude and the rides. Ride the High Roller for the central location and the open bar cabin. They scratch different itches.

06

My Verdict

Worth it once, at night, ideally in the Happy Half Hour cabin. It is an easy, relaxed, very Vegas way to see the Strip with a drink in your hand.

If you are short on time and budget and want the single best view of the fountains, do the Eiffel Tower deck instead. But the High Roller earns its spot.

Quick answers

Frequently asked

How long does the High Roller take?

One full rotation runs about 30 minutes. Lines move in cycles since cabins load continuously, so plan for roughly 45 minutes to an hour total with boarding.

Is the open bar cabin worth the upgrade?

If you drink, yes. Unlimited pours over a 30 minute ride mean a couple of drinks roughly cover the difference, and the vibe is much more fun.

When is the best time to ride?

Board right at sunset. You catch the changing sky and then watch the Strip lights come up during your rotation, which is the best of both.
