Red Rock Canyon Scenic Drive From Las Vegas: Timed Entry and Tips
6 min read
Red Rock Canyon is the closest real nature to the Strip, a 20-minute drive that swaps neon for 3,000-foot red sandstone cliffs. The 13-mile scenic loop is one of the best cheap half-days in Las Vegas.
The thing that catches people out now is the timed-entry reservation system on the scenic drive. Show up without one in the wrong season and you get turned away at the gate. Here is exactly how it works.
How Timed Entry Works
During the busy season, generally October through May, the scenic drive requires a timed-entry reservation to enter between roughly 8am and 5pm. You book a one-hour arrival window online ahead of time for a small per-vehicle fee on top of the entrance pass.
Outside those hours and outside that season, the reservation is not required, just the standard entrance fee.
Reservations open on a rolling basis and the prime morning slots go fast on weekends. Book a few days out if you want a sunrise or early window.
Costs and Passes
The entrance fee is a modest per-vehicle charge. The timed-entry reservation is a separate small booking fee.
If you already have an America the Beautiful federal lands pass, it covers the entrance fee, but you still need the timed-entry reservation in season.
This is one of the cheapest outings in Vegas. Two people can do the whole loop for the price of two cocktails on the Strip.
Driving the 13-Mile Loop
The scenic drive is a one-way 13-mile loop, so once you commit, you follow it all the way around. Budget at least an hour just for driving and stopping, more if you hike.
Top pullouts: Calico Hills for the bright red rock and easy scrambling, High Point Overlook for the big valley view, and the Sandstone Quarry and Ice Box Canyon trailheads if you want to walk.
Go early. Morning light on the red rock is the best photography of the day, the parking lots are open, and you beat the heat.
Visitor Center and What to Skip
Stop at the visitor center first. The outdoor exhibits, desert tortoise habitat, and the orientation are genuinely good and it sets up the drive.
Skip trying to do this in the dead of summer midday. The desert heat is no joke, shade is scarce, and the timed entry plus heat makes it a poor experience.
There is no food in the park to speak of, so pack water and snacks. The town of Summerlin on the way back has plenty of options.
Self-Drive vs Tour
Self-drive wins here. The loop is easy, paved, and the whole point is going at your own pace. A rental or even a rideshare out makes sense.
Guided tours exist, including van tours and e-bike and road-bike tours of the loop, which are a fun alternative if you want the exercise without your own gear.
If you are carless, a half-day tour from the Strip is a reasonable way to see it, but you give up the freedom to linger at the pullouts you like.

Frequently asked
Do I always need a timed-entry reservation for Red Rock Canyon?
No. It is required only during the busy season, roughly October through May, between about 8am and 5pm. Outside those hours and months you just pay the entrance fee.
How long does the Red Rock scenic drive take?
Plan at least an hour to drive and stop at pullouts, and two to four hours if you add a hike. The loop is 13 one-way miles.
Can I get to Red Rock Canyon without a car?
A rideshare out is easy, but return availability is limited at the trailheads. A guided van or bike tour is the cleaner carless option.
