Outdoor Things to Do Near Las Vegas
8 min read
People forget Vegas sits in the middle of some of the most dramatic desert scenery in America. Within an hour or two of the Strip you have red rock canyons, alpine forests, a giant lake, and a national park.
When I need a break from the casino air, this is where I go. Here are the outdoor trips worth taking, with honest notes on distance, difficulty, and when to actually go given the heat.
Red Rock Canyon
The easiest and best outdoor escape, Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is just 20 minutes west of the Strip. Towering red and tan sandstone cliffs, a 13-mile scenic loop drive, and dozens of trails.
You can do it as a quick scenic drive or a serious hike. Timed entry reservations are often required in peak months, so check ahead and book.
Go early in the day, especially in summer. The afternoon heat on exposed rock is genuinely dangerous. This is my top outdoor pick near Vegas.
Valley of Fire State Park
About an hour northeast, Valley of Fire is Nevada's oldest state park and it is spectacular. Brilliant red Aztec sandstone formations, ancient petroglyphs, and otherworldly rock shapes.
It is less crowded than Red Rock and arguably more dramatic. The Fire Wave and the Elephant Rock are highlights. Bring water and go in the cooler months or early morning.
If you want the best desert scenery near Vegas and have a half day, this is the one.
Hoover Dam and Lake Mead
Forty-five minutes southeast, the Hoover Dam is an engineering marvel and a genuine bucket-list sight. Tours take you inside, or you can just walk the dam and the bridge for free.
Adjacent Lake Mead offers boating, kayaking, and shoreline drives, though water levels have dropped over the years. Combine the two for an easy half-day trip.
Tours from the Strip handle the driving if you do not have a car, and most depart in the morning.
Mount Charleston
Here is the one most tourists miss. Mount Charleston, about 45 minutes northwest, climbs to nearly 12,000 feet and is often 20 to 30 degrees cooler than the Strip.
In summer it is a pine-forest escape with hiking trails and shade. In winter there is actual snow and a small ski area. Yes, you can ski near Vegas.
If the Strip heat is crushing you, this is the cool-down escape locals use. Bring a layer, it gets genuinely cold up there.
Grand Canyon day trips
The Grand Canyon is the big one. The West Rim, on the Hualapai reservation, is about two to two and a half hours and home to the glass Skywalk. The South Rim is the classic but a longer four-plus hour drive.
Most people do this as a guided tour or even a helicopter flight from Vegas, which turns a long drive into a stunning aerial trip. It is a full day but a genuine once-in-a-lifetime sight.
If you have the time and budget, do it. Few day trips in America beat it.
Outdoor activities on the Strip itself
Not every outdoor moment requires a drive. The resort pools are the main outdoor draw in town, and the dayclub scene turns them into a party. Top of my list: Encore Beach Club and the Stadium Swim setup at Circa Downtown.
There are also outdoor ziplines over Fremont Street, helicopter and balloon rides, and the simple pleasure of walking the Strip at night when the air finally cools. Plenty of outdoors without leaving the city.

Frequently asked
What is the best outdoor trip near Las Vegas?
Red Rock Canyon for ease, just 20 minutes from the Strip. Valley of Fire for the most dramatic scenery. Both are stunning. If you have a full day, a Grand Canyon trip is unbeatable.
Can you do outdoor activities in summer?
Yes, but go early and respect the heat. Hike before mid-morning, carry far more water than you think you need, and consider Mount Charleston, which runs 20 to 30 degrees cooler than the Strip.
Do I need a car for outdoor trips near Vegas?
A car gives you the most freedom, but guided tours from the Strip cover Red Rock, Hoover Dam, Valley of Fire, and the Grand Canyon with hotel pickup, so you can skip the rental entirely.
