How to Spend a Layover in Las Vegas: Quick Things to Do

7 min read

Harry Reid International sits about 10 minutes from the Strip, which makes a Vegas layover one of the few in America where leaving the airport is genuinely worth it. But only if you have enough buffer.

I have killed layovers here both ways, in the terminal and out on the Strip. Here is the honest breakdown of what you can do based on how much time you actually have between flights.

01

The Time Math You Have to Do First

Subtract before you dream. You need to land, get to baggage if checked, clear back through security on return, and be at your gate before boarding. That eats two to three hours minimum off any layover.

My rule: under four hours total, stay in the terminal. Four to six hours, you can do a quick Strip dash. Over six hours, you have a real mini-trip.

Domestic connections are more forgiving than international. And never cut it close in Vegas, because traffic on the Strip and rideshare surges can blow up your timeline fast.

02

Under 3 Hours: Stay in the Terminal

Harry Reid is the only major US airport with slot machines at the gates, so the most Vegas thing you can do is lose $20 without leaving your terminal. It is a rite of passage.

Grab real food too. The airport has solid local options beyond fast food, and the people-watching at a Vegas airport is its own attraction.

If you have a lounge pass or the right card, the lounges here are a fine place to wait out a short connection in peace. Do not risk the Strip on a sub-three-hour window.

03

4 to 6 Hours: The Strip Dash

This is enough for a focused hit. Rideshare to the central Strip in about 10 to 15 minutes, pick one cluster, and stay tight. Do not try to see everything.

My move: get dropped at the Bellagio, watch the fountains, walk the conservatory, cross to the Venetian or Caesars for the interiors, grab a quick meal, and head back. That is a complete Vegas taste in two hours on the ground.

Keep your bags carry-on only and skip checking anything. Set a hard alarm for your return ride and pad it heavily.

04

6+ Hours: A Real Mini-Trip

Now you have options. Sit-down meal at a buffet or a name restaurant, a paid attraction like the High Roller, a daytime show matinee, or a proper walk of multiple resorts.

If it is your first time in Vegas, do the classic central-Strip loop and one paid thing. If you have been before, this is enough time for a downtown Fremont Street run, which feels like a totally different city.

Still keep the return buffer sacred. Six hours sounds like a lot until a coaster line, a slow check, and a surge ride eat 90 minutes you did not plan for.

05

Getting To and From the Strip Fast

Rideshare is the fastest and most flexible option, roughly 10 to 15 minutes to the central Strip outside of peak traffic. The pickup zones at Harry Reid are well marked but can surge-price, so budget for that.

There is also an airport shuttle and the RTC bus options, cheaper but slower, which only make sense on a long layover where saving money beats saving time.

Whatever you choose, screenshot your return plan before you leave the airport. Knowing exactly where your pickup zone is on the way back saves you the panic scramble.

Quick answers

Frequently asked

How long of a layover do I need to leave the Vegas airport?

Four hours is the minimum I would risk for a quick Strip dash, and that is tight. Under four hours, stay in the terminal. Over six hours, you have time for a real mini-trip with a meal and an attraction. Always pad heavily for security and traffic.

Is the Vegas airport close to the Strip?

Yes, Harry Reid International is about 10 to 15 minutes from the central Strip by rideshare. It is one of the closest major-airport-to-attraction setups in the country, which is what makes leaving the terminal actually worthwhile here.

What can I do if I am stuck in the terminal?

Play the slot machines, which Harry Reid famously has right at the gates, grab some of the better local food options, and people-watch. With the right card or a day pass, the lounges are a comfortable spot to wait out a short connection.
