Sunset and Sunrise Spots in Las Vegas (All Free)
6 min read
Vegas sunsets are unreal. The desert light hits the mountains and the Strip glass and turns everything pink and gold, and the best viewing spots cost exactly zero dollars.
Here are my favorite free places to catch sunrise and sunset around Vegas, from desert overlooks to casino vantage points you can reach without buying a ticket.
Red Rock Canyon Overlooks
For sunset, the red sandstone at Red Rock Canyon glows like it is on fire. High Point Overlook on the scenic drive gives you the widest valley view, and the main visitor center area faces the cliffs.
Note the scenic drive has a closing time and may need a reservation in busy season, so check the gate hours. The cliffs along the highway outside the drive are free to pull over and watch anytime.
The Strip Bridges at Golden Hour
The pedestrian bridges over Las Vegas Boulevard, especially the ones near the Bellagio, Cosmopolitan, and Planet Hollywood, give you free elevated views of the Strip lighting up as the sky goes pink.
Stand on the Bellagio bridge facing the fountains as the sun drops and the lights come on. Free, central, and one of the best Strip photos you can get.
Sunset Park (Yes, That Is the Name)
Sunset Park, southeast of the Strip near the airport, is a large free public park with a lake, walking paths, and open western views perfect for, fittingly, sunset.
It is a local spot, not a tourist one, which is exactly why it is calm and free. Bring a blanket and watch the planes and the sky.
Lake Mead and the Desert East of Town
Drive 30 minutes east toward Lake Mead and the desert overlooks give you huge open sunset skies over the water and mountains, away from all the city light.
There is a fee to enter the main recreation area, but the highway pullouts and overlooks on the way out have free wide-open desert views.
High-Floor Hotel Hallways and Lobbies
Here is a free trick: many high-floor hotel elevator landings, sky lobbies, and restaurant waiting areas have huge windows facing the valley. You do not always need a paid observation deck.
The upper floors of resorts like the Cosmopolitan and Aria have public sky-level spaces with valley views. Scout one out late afternoon for a free sunset window seat.
Sunrise Over the Strip from the East
For sunrise, you want to be east of the Strip looking west so the rising sun lights up the casino towers. The Sphere area and the east-facing pedestrian bridges work well.
Sunrise in Vegas is gloriously empty. The party people are asleep, the light is soft, and you will have the best spots to yourself for free.
David X Las Vegas earns a commission on bookings made through this link, at no extra cost to you. It never changes my honest take.
