Driving From Las Vegas to Zion: Route, Shuttle, and Timing

6 min read

The drive from Las Vegas to Zion is one of the easiest national park runs in the West. It is almost all interstate, the scenery picks up dramatically once you cross into Utah, and you can be standing under thousand-foot cliffs in under three hours.

I have made this drive a bunch of times in every season, and the only things that consistently throw people off are gas timing, the Virgin River Gorge stretch, and not understanding how Zion's shuttle works before they arrive. Let me walk you through all of it.

01

The Route, Step by Step

Head north on I-15 out of Vegas. You will cut across the northwest corner of Arizona through the Virgin River Gorge, which is a genuinely beautiful and slightly winding canyon stretch, then into Utah.

At St. George or Hurricane, exit toward Highway 9 east and follow it through La Verkin and into Springdale, the town at Zion's south entrance. The turn off the interstate is well signed. Total distance is around 160 miles.

02

Timing It Right

Plan on 2.5 to 3 hours of pure driving, more if you stop. To get a real day in the park, roll out of Vegas by 6 to 7 a.m.

Watch out for the time zone. Utah is on Mountain Time and observes daylight saving, so for part of the year you lose an hour crossing the state line. Factor that into both your arrival and your drive home so you are not surprised by the clock.

03

Where to Stop for Gas and Food

St. George is your best major stop, with plenty of gas, fast food, and coffee right off the interstate. Hurricane and La Verkin also have options closer to the park.

Springdale itself has restaurants and shops but everything costs gateway-town prices. Top off the tank in St. George or Hurricane so you are not paying a premium and you are full for the drive back.

04

The Shuttle System Explained

From roughly March through November, the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive is closed to private vehicles. You park at the visitor center or in Springdale and ride the free park shuttle, which loops to all the major trailheads. There is also a separate Springdale town shuttle that brings you to the entrance.

In the off-season, usually winter, the shuttle typically does not run and you can drive your own car up the scenic road. Always check current shuttle status before you go because the dates shift year to year.

05

Parking Reality Check

The Zion visitor center lot fills up early, sometimes by 8 or 9 a.m. in peak season. If it is full you park in Springdale and take the town shuttle in.

Getting there early is the single best parking strategy. The lots that are jammed at 10 a.m. are wide open at 7. This is the whole reason I push the early start.
