The Best Free Things to Do Off the Strip (2026)

8 min read

Everyone overdoses on the Strip and forgets there's a whole city out here. Some of my favorite free things in Vegas aren't on the boulevard at all.

Here's where to go when you want to escape the casino noise without spending money. A rideshare or a rental car gets you to all of it.

01

The Fremont Street Experience

Downtown's covered pedestrian street is the original Vegas, and the canopy light show overhead is free.

Shows run hourly after dark on a screen the length of four football fields. Below it: street performers, live bands, zip-liners flying overhead, and casinos with cheaper tables than the Strip.

It's a 15-minute ride from the Strip. Go after dark, stay a couple hours, and you'll see why locals prefer it.

02

The Arts District

Just south of downtown, the 18b Arts District is murals, vintage shops, breweries, and galleries with zero admission to walk it.

First Friday each month is the big event: the streets fill with art vendors, food trucks, and live music. Free to wander.

This is the anti-Strip. Real neighborhood, real character, no slot machines. Spend an afternoon just walking and looking at the murals.

03

Seven Magic Mountains

About 20 minutes south of the Strip, artist Ugo Rondinone planted seven towers of stacked, neon-painted boulders in the desert.

It's free to see and one of the most photographed spots in the region. The colors against the empty desert and mountains are striking in person.

Go at sunrise or sunset for the light and the cooler temperature. Midday in summer is brutal and the colors wash out. Bring water either way.

04

The Welcome to Las Vegas Sign

The iconic neon sign sits on a median at the south end of the Strip, and the photo is free.

There's a small parking lot and usually a line for the picture. Mornings are calmer. An attendant is often there to snap your photo on busy days.

It's a five-minute stop, not a destination, but it's the classic Vegas shot. Knock it out on your way to or from the airport.

05

Red Rock Canyon Overlook

Twenty-five minutes west of the Strip, Red Rock Canyon is the easiest escape into real desert. The red sandstone cliffs are stunning.

There's a scenic loop drive with a small fee, but you can pull off at overlooks and trailheads near the entrance for free views, and several trailhead areas and the surrounding desert cost nothing.

Morning is the move, both for heat and for the light on the rock. This is the trip that reminds you Vegas sits in one of the most dramatic landscapes in the country.

Quick answers

Frequently asked

Is Seven Magic Mountains free?

Yes. The installation and its parking lot are free to visit. It's about a 20-minute drive south of the Strip, best at sunrise or sunset.

How do I get off the Strip without a car?

Rideshare covers Fremont Street, the Arts District, and the Welcome sign easily. For Red Rock Canyon and Seven Magic Mountains, a rental car or a tour is far more practical.

What's the best free off-Strip thing at night?

The Fremont Street Experience. The hourly canopy light show plus the street energy is the best free nighttime scene away from the boulevard.
