ATV and Off-Road Tours From Las Vegas to the Desert Dunes

The headline destination is the Nellis Dunes area north of Las Vegas, a sprawling off-road zone of sandy trails and rolling dunes only about 30 minutes from the Strip. It is the most common pickup-included option.

Other operators run trips into the Mojave Desert backcountry and old mining areas to the south and west, which trade big dunes for varied terrain, washes, and scenery.

Logandale Trails and the desert near Valley of Fire come up too for longer, more scenic rides. If dunes are your goal, confirm the tour actually goes to a dune area and not just flat fire roads.

ATVs (quads) are the classic single-rider machine, hands-on and the most physical to ride. Great if you want to feel like you are doing the driving.

UTVs and side-by-sides (think RZRs) seat two or more, have seatbelts and roll cages, and let groups and families ride together. These are my pick for most people, especially mixed-skill groups.

Some operators offer dune buggies and even guided Hummer or jeep tours if you want the off-road scenery without driving yourself. Match the machine to how much you actually want to be behind the wheel.

Most tours include hotel or central pickup, a safety briefing, the vehicle, helmet and goggles, and a guide who leads the route. Many include water and some include snacks.

Durations range from a couple of hours of riding to half-day trips. Longer is not always better; two to three hours of actual riding is plenty before fatigue sets in, especially in heat.

Confirm whether fuel, gratuity, and any bandana or dust gear are included. The dust is real, so a face covering and eye protection are not optional.

Fall through spring is prime. Summer riding happens but operators shift to early morning or evening departures to dodge the worst heat, and you should book those slots.

Sunset rides are popular for good reason; the light on the dunes is incredible and the temperature is bearable. Morning rides beat both heat and afternoon wind.

Avoid midday summer departures entirely. Open desert at 110 degrees on a machine is miserable and risky, no matter how fun the dunes look.

Great for adventure seekers, groups, bachelor and bachelorette parties, and families with the right vehicle choice. Many operators have minimum age and license requirements for driving versus riding, so check before booking with kids.

Listen to the guide, stay in the established route, and respect the machine; these are powerful and the sand can grab a wheel. Most injuries come from showing off, not from the terrain.

Dress for dust and sun: closed shoes, long sleeves are smart, sunscreen, and a face covering. You will get sandy, and that is part of the fun.
