JustCover analyzed more than one million online reviews across 155 popular destinations worldwide, published August 6. Instead of averaging star ratings, researchers scanned the actual review text for language tied to genuine positive emotion, phrases like made me so happy or genuine happiness, and turned that into a Happy Place Score out of 100 for each destination.

Las Vegas scored an 88, good for fourth place globally, behind only Tulum, Mexico, Soufriere in Saint Lucia, and Oaxaca, Mexico. That made it the top scoring destination anywhere in the United States. Maui came in fifth, followed by New York City in sixth, Chicago in ninth, Austin in twelfth, New Orleans in thirteenth, Miami in sixteenth, San Francisco in seventeenth, Nashville in eighteenth, Los Angeles in nineteenth, and Boston rounding out the top twenty.

JustCover is a travel insurance company, not a tourism board, which is worth noting since it has no obvious reason to talk its own book by ranking Las Vegas so highly. Its stated interest in the project was less about marketing any one city and more about figuring out which trips actually deliver on the emotional payoff travelers are paying for, the kind of question an insurer cares about when it is pricing coverage for a vacation.

According to Nomad Lawyer's reporting on the study, JustCover credited Las Vegas's showing to the density of five star hotels, live entertainment residencies at venues like the Sphere, casinos, fine dining, and the sheer volume of visitors arriving already in a celebratory mood for weddings and milestone birthdays. Buffets and pool scenes got a mention too, the kind of amenities that show up constantly in glowing review language even when a trip is otherwise just a long weekend of gambling and shows.

The line that is going to follow this study around is the Disneyland comparison. A brand built entirely around calling itself the happiest place on Earth just got out scored by a city best known for its casino floors and its motto about what happens there staying there. 8 News Now leaned into that exact contrast in its own writeup of the results, and JustCover's own summary of the findings put it more bluntly: what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, but it at least leaves travelers with a smile.

None of this is a controlled experiment, it is text analysis run on review language, and a destination people already chose to visit is going to skew toward reviewers who liked it. But the pattern holds up across a big enough sample, and it lines up with something I hear from visitors constantly, that a Vegas trip tends to deliver on the specific mood people came here chasing, whereas a lot of destinations leave you happy with the scenery but neutral on the actual experience.
